Saturday Morning Adult Recreational Tennis (SMART)
Advanced Beginner to Intermediate Level Drop-In Doubles

  • Open to Levels 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 (learn more about levels)
  • Fun, Exercise, and Competition
  • No Time Commitment, Just Show Up!
  • No Cost*
  • That's SMART!

Saturday Morning Adult Recreational Tennis (SMART) is a mixed doubles "drop-in tennis" league.   Drop-in leagues are designed to match random players of similar ability at a designated time and place.  With drop-in tennis, there is no need to form a team or commit to a set league schedule.  You just "drop-in" for a pick up game.  Currently, the group meets the first three Saturdays of the month at J Sargeant Reynolds Parham Campus tennis courts (reserved courts, see directions below).  The sessions last from 10 AM* to noon (note: new 2009 starting time).  The tennis meetup is open to men and women 18 years or older.  As we play on public courts, there is no cost to play (*however, a $1 donation or a can good for the Central Virginia Foodbank is very much appreciated).  To participate, all you need to do is stop in any Saturday with a can of new balls. Email if you need more information or want to be added to the email list.

Rules of Play

If needed, we will try to accommodate different skill levels by breaking up into two groups:

  • Group A (Advanced Beginner): Levels 2.5 to 3.0

  • Group B (Intermediate): Levels 3.0 to 3.5

The session begins with each player drawing a random number from a deck of cards.  The number corresponds with the court location of the match:

For example, the players who draw 1 and 2, respectively, will be teammates competing against the players who draw 3 and 4.  This group of players would play on Court 1.

Each session consists of 4 games with each player serving.  Teams switch sides after two games.  No ad scoring; at deuce, the receiving team chooses which player gets to return the serve.

Once the session has completed, all players re-draw new numbers and play another set of four games.  This allows for a variety of different opponents and teammates.  The only way to improve your tennis game is to expose yourself to new players and styles.

Each day is first come, first serve (based on sign-up).  If we have more players than courts, then we will place the overflow players on each court (ie, 5 per court).  In this scenario, every one serves once (ie, 5 games total).  The server will rotate out, and players will shift counter clockwise with the 5th player rotating in, etc.

If there is extreme over capacity (ie, over 30 players), we will try to accommodate late players by pairing them in another nearby public court.

SMART Supports the Central Virginia Food Bank

The official charity of SMART is the Central Virginia Food Bank, whose mission is simply "that none shall go hungry."  This year, we are encouraging players to donate either a dollar or a can of food to support our league’s charity the Central Virginia Foodbank. Donations are completely optional. In addition, we will be selling ice cold spring water every Saturday for a buck. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Foodbank. At the end of the season in October, we will present all money raised to our charity (all foods will be donated immediately).
